Byron McMahon is the president and CFO of Wyndham Capital, a multibillion dollar global financial services company based out of New York that’s set to take over all of the leases in my building. Wyndham Capital has offices in every major city on most continents. So when I landed the opportunity to sign ten-year lease with them in my building, there was no chance in hell I was going to pass that up.

Did I want to drive out my biggest commercial building’s local retail businesses, like Tristan’s art studio? Not even close. But business is business. And that's why am going to make it up to him…

And believe me, I am going to make it up to him and then some.

I check my watch. If all goes as planned, Tristan will be here in a matter of minutes according to my receptionist who scoped out the scene on the first floor where Tristan’s studio resides. As I wait for the moment of truth, Byron McMahon studies the painting that Tristan did that is now hanging on my wall, the one that started this mess in the first place. It clearly resonates with the corporate mogul, just like it did with me.

“Can I get you a drink, Byron?” I say.

Byron chuckles. “I haven't even had breakfast yet. I'll pass,” he says.

“I figured so much,” I say. I'm slightly nervous, as is evidenced by the moisture on my palms and the fact that my heart seems to be racing a bit faster than usual. This isn’t like me. But I find that I get nervous around Tristan Harding each time I manage to cross paths with him.

What's really weird is, right now I'm more nervous about not crossing paths with him than anything else. Is it possible that he might just refuse to show up? My assistant left a note on the door of the studio with very explicit instructions to arrive at my office by 9:30; she spoke with the guard at the main foyer who confirmed that he did in fact enter the building.

I check my watch again; it's now 9:38 a.m. Under normal circumstances, I don’t tolerate latecomers. But these are not normal circumstances…

I watch Byron's face carefully. He seems to be getting a bit restless himself. Eight minutes late for a man of his stature is like three days late for the common man. I tap a pen nervously on my executive style desk, pretending to be as calm and cool inside as I possibly can. “You’re sure this young man will be coming?” Byron snaps.

“He’s coming,” I say, trying to appear as confident as I can. “He should be here any –”

Before I can finish my sentence, my receptionist, Jess, calls through my intercom, “Mr. Kade, Mr. Harding is here to see you.”

I can't stop a smile from spreading across my face. This is going to be fucking incredible, I tell myself. In fact, this might just be the best thing that's ever happened to me, and that’s saying a hell of a lot.
